Walter Millard Fleming
In 1870 there were thousands of Freemasons in Manhattan, many who have breakfast in the Knickerbocker Cottage, in a special table located on the second floor. Hence the idea of a new Masonic brotherhood inspire the young and the issue was discussed. Dr. Walter M. Fleming, MD, and William J. Florence took the idea seriously and implemented.
Florence a world-renowned actor, who was on tour in Marseilles, was invited to a party given by an Arab diplomat. The event was something like a musical comedy produced. In his conclusion, the guests came to be members of a secret society. Florence took many notes and create drawings displaying his initiation and on two other occasions, once in Algiers and another in Cairo. When returning to New York in 1870 he showed his material to Fleming .
William Florence
Fleming took the ideas supplied by Florence and became what would be the "Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Shrine Mistico (AOANRM). Fleming created the ritual, emblem and costumes. Florence and Fleming were launched on August 13, 1870, and began a 11 men on June 16, 1871 .
The group adopted a theme of Middle East and the churches like mosques (though the word temple has been replaced by "audit" or "Center Shriner). The first temple was established Mecca Temple (now known as Mecca Shrine), established by the Masonic Hall in the city of New York on September 26, 1872. Fleming was the first potentate.
In 1875, there were only 43 in the Shriners organization. In an effort to expand the number of members was established on Grand Council of the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Shrine Mistico June 6, 1876 to meet in Mecca Temple. Ahi Fleming was elected as the first imperial potentate. After some reorganization, so 1878 had 425 members in 13 churches in eight states, and for 1888 there were 7210 members in 48 temples in the United States and Canada. For the Imperial Session held in Washington DC in 1900, were 55.000 members and 82 churches.
